Arrive in Santiago, Chile today and explore the entire magnificent city on your own—you'll enjoy a short amount of time both here and in Punta Arenas before making the exciting journey down to Antarctica.
Enjoy breakfast early this morning before checking out of your hotel. Transfer is included to Santiago Airport, where your charter flight to Punta Arenas awaits (luggage will be transported separately to the airport). When we arrive in Punta Arenas, we’ll transfer from the airport to the pier.
Today we set off on our voyage to Antarctica by way of the breathtaking Magellan Strait, one of the world’s most remote and undisturbed places. Mountains rise up on either side of our ship as we pass through the channels and fjords which bear the name of their discoverer, Ferdinand Magellan, in 1520. This 347-mile-long barrier between the mainland and Tierra del Fuego, ‘Land of Fire’, is the main gateway to the continent of Antarctica.
Cross one of the world’s most notorious channels today as we travel toward the Antarctic Peninsula. A record 35-hour sailing in fair weather and the pathway for the world’s most famous polar explorers, the Drake Passage is the convergence of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Great Southern Ocean—a great meeting of northerly warm, saline-rich water and southern colder, less salty water—and you can spot an amazing amount of seabirds (including the wandering albatross) on the voyage. There’s a lot to do on board before you reach Antarctica! Enjoy a lecture series covering topics such as history of the area, the environment, and the native wildlife of Antarctica—as well as current guidelines for visiting this pristine continent—aboard the ship while we cross.
Today we’ll reach the mysterious and remote continent of Antarctica, renowned for its purity and wildlife and witnessed by very few. About 99% of the world’s ice is located here, nearly 2.5 miles thick, and in winter an additional amount of sea ice forms off the coast: this virtually doubles the size of the continent, extending outward toward the sea around South Georgia.
Today we journey toward the Falkland Islands in the South Atlantic, one of the world’s last untouched nature-rich territories. Located 479 miles north of Cape Horn and roughly 994 miles from Antarctica, the Falkland Islands archipelago (2 large islands and about 700 small islands) are home to hundreds of unique species of wildlife—including king penguins, killer whales, elephant seals, and a fantastic variety of birdlife.
Sail through the legendary Magellan Strait – named for the famous explorer who was the first recorded to successfully navigate it in 1520, Ferdinand Magellan – toward Punta Arenas, enjoying a final look at the majestic fjords and channels of the vast waterway.
Say your final farewells to the crew and captain, then disembark from the ship today and transfer from the pier to the airport (transfer included). If there’s time, you may be treated to a short orientation tour of Punta Arenas before your flight back to Chile’s capital, Santiago.
Transfer on your own from the Santiago domestic airport to the international airport for your
